How This Calculator Works

Bricklaying math comes down to how many brick-plus-mortar-joint units fit into your wall's surface area. Each brick's footprint includes its own length and height plus one mortar joint on each side. Divide the wall area (in square inches) by that footprint to get a base brick count, then add a waste buffer for cuts, breakage, and pattern adjustments. This calculator also estimates mortar bags using the industry-standard ratio of about 125 modular bricks per 80 lb bag.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Convert wall dimensions to inches: Wall area (sq in) = (Length_ft × 12) × (Height_ft × 12).

Brick footprint (sq in) = (Brick length + Joint) × (Brick height + Joint).

Base bricks = Wall area ÷ Footprint.

Bricks needed = ceil( Base bricks × (1 + waste %) ).

Mortar bags (80 lb) = ceil( Bricks needed ÷ 125 ).

Worked Step-by-Step Example

A 20 × 8 ft wall, standard 8 × 2.25 in brick, 3/8 in (0.375) joint, 10% waste:

Wall area = 240 × 96 = 23,040 sq in. Footprint = 8.375 × 2.625 = 21.98 sq in. Base bricks = 23,040 / 21.98 ≈ 1,048. With waste: 1,048 × 1.10 = 1,153 bricks (rounded up). Mortar bags = ceil(1,153 / 125) = 10 bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

The industry standard is 3/8 inch (0.375 in) for modular and standard bricks. Thinner joints (1/4 in) suit precise modern aesthetics but require very consistent bricks; thicker joints use fewer bricks but more mortar. This calculator defaults to 3/8 in.

One 80 lb bag of premixed mortar typically lays about 125 standard modular bricks. For larger bricks (king or queen size), a bag covers fewer units. The calculator uses the 125-brick ratio and rounds up to the nearest full bag.

Measure each solid wall section separately and add the results, or subtract each opening's area (width × height) from the wall's total area before entering it. A standard 3×5 ft window removes about 15 sq ft; a 3×7 ft door about 21 sq ft. Each opening also needs a brick lintel or header above it.
