How This Calculator Works

Drywall is ordered by the sheet, so the job is converting your wall and ceiling surface area into a panel count. Total drywall area equals the wall area (perimeter × height) plus the ceiling area (if included), minus doors and windows. This calculator assumes a standard 21 sq ft door and 15 sq ft window and subtracts them before dividing by the chosen panel size. A 10–15% waste buffer covers cuts around outlets and corners, and the result is rounded up to a full sheet. It also estimates companion materials: joint compound, tape, and screws.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height.

Ceiling area (if included) = Length × Width.

Openings area = (Doors × 21) + (Windows × 15).

Net drywall area = Wall area + Ceiling area − Openings area.

Panels needed = ceil( Net area × (1 + waste %) / Panel area ), where a 4×8 sheet is 32 sq ft and a 4×12 sheet is 48 sq ft.

Worked Step-by-Step Example

A 12 × 10 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling, one door, one window, 4×8 panels, and a 10% waste buffer:

Wall area = 2 × (12 + 10) × 8 = 352 sq ft. Openings = 21 + 15 = 36 sq ft. Net area = 352 − 36 = 316 sq ft. With waste: 316 × 1.10 = 347.6 sq ft. Panels = ceil(347.6 / 32) = 11 sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) are the residential standard, easiest to carry alone and ideal for 8 ft walls. 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft) cover more area per panel and mean fewer seams to tape, but they are heavier and need a second person or a panel lift, especially for ceilings.

Use the include-ceiling toggle. The calculator adds Length × Width to your wall area before subtracting openings and dividing by panel size. Ceilings often benefit from 4×12 sheets to reduce the number of seams overhead.

Budget about 32 screws per 4×8 panel (one screw every 8 inches along each stud, with studs 16 inches on center). This calculator multiplies the panel count by 32 automatically.
