How This Calculator Works

Decking boards are sold in fixed lengths, so the job is converting your deck's total area into a count of boards that will cover it. Each board covers its width times its length in square feet; divide the deck area by that coverage and add a waste buffer for cuts and staggered seams. This calculator also estimates deck screws using the standard ratio of about 350 screws per 100 sq ft (two screws per joist, joists 16 in on center). Standard decking is 5.5 in wide (a nominal 2×6) in 12, 16, or 20 ft lengths.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Deck area = Deck length × Deck width (sq ft).

Board coverage (sq ft) = (Board width in / 12) × Board length ft.

Boards needed = ceil( (Deck area ÷ Board coverage) × (1 + waste %) ).

Deck screws ≈ ceil( Deck area × 3.5 ).

Worked Step-by-Step Example

A 16 × 12 ft deck with 5.5 in × 16 ft boards and a 10% waste buffer:

Deck area = 192 sq ft. Board coverage = (5.5/12) × 16 = 7.33 sq ft. Base boards = 192 / 7.33 ≈ 26.2. With waste: 26.2 × 1.10 = 28.8 → 29 boards. Screws = 192 × 3.5 = 672 screws.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most pressure-treated and composite decking needs a 1/8 to 1/4 in gap for drainage and seasonal movement; cedar and redwood about 1/4 in. Some composite boards are self-gapping. The gap slightly reduces effective coverage — for very precise planning, reduce the board width by about 0.25 in.

Straight perpendicular layouts need about 10%. Diagonal (45°) patterns produce more offcuts because every board is angle-cut — use 15% or more. Picture-frame borders with mitered corners need 15–20%. For complex multi-angle or curved designs, 20% is safer than running short.

Yes. Hidden clip systems use far fewer face screws but require the matching clip count. Consult the fastener manufacturer's coverage chart for exact counts. The screw estimate here assumes traditional two-screws-per-joist face fastening.
