Estimate how many tiles you need for any room based on room and tile dimensions, with a live visual tile count. Choose your waste buffer by layout — straight grid, brick pattern, or diagonal — and round up to full boxes so you never run short.

How This Calculator Works

Tile is sold per piece or per box, so converting your room's square footage into an exact tile count avoids running short mid-installation. The count equals the room area divided by each tile's area, with a waste buffer for cuts and pattern layout. The waste buffer depends heavily on the layout: 10% for a straight grid, 10–15% for brick/running bond, 15% or more for diagonal. Always round up to the nearest full box and buy everything from the same dye lot so a future repair matches.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Room area = Room length × Room width (sq ft).

Tile area (sq ft) = (Tile width in / 12) × (Tile height in / 12).

Tiles needed = ceil( (Room area ÷ Tile area) × (1 + waste %) ).

Estimated cost = Tiles needed × Cost per tile.

Worked Step-by-Step Example

A 10 × 10 ft room with 12 × 12 in tiles and a 10% waste buffer:

Room area = 100 sq ft. Tile area = (12/12) × (12/12) = 1 sq ft. Base tiles = 100 / 1 = 100. With waste: 100 × 1.10 = 110 → 110 tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

10% for straight grid layouts. Brick or running bond patterns need 10–15% for the half-tile offsets. Diagonal (45°) layouts need 15% or more because every edge tile is angle-cut. Small or irregular rooms need at least 15% regardless of layout due to the number of perimeter cuts.

Break the room into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results. Apply the waste buffer to the combined total, not per section, so it covers the full project's cuts. Keep at least one unopened box for future repairs — dye lots may not match years later.

Yes. Tiles from the same product line can vary between dye lots, so a repair made with a different lot may be visibly different. Store leftover tiles flat in a dry area — especially important for natural stone or encaustic tile where lot variation is more pronounced.
