How This Calculator Works

Splitting a restaurant bill fairly gets complicated once tax, tip, and an uneven party size are involved. This calculator splits the total — bill plus a tip percentage you choose — evenly across the group, and optionally rounds each person's share up to the nearest cent so the group slightly over-tips rather than shortchanges the server. Standard U.S. tipping ranges from 15% for adequate service to 20–25% for excellent service or large parties, with a few dollars minimum on small orders. For groups who ordered very different meals, the fairest approach is to itemize and use this tool to compute the tip on each person's share.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Tip = Bill × (tipPct ÷ 100). Total = Bill + Tip. Per Person = Total ÷ People. With round-up: Per Person (rounded) = ceil(Per Person × 100) ÷ 100; Rounded Total = Per Person (rounded) × People; effective tip = Tip + (Rounded Total − Total).

Worked Step-by-Step Example

An $85 bill with an 18% tip split among 4 people: Tip = $85 × 0.18 = $15.30; Total = $100.30; Per Person = $25.08. Enabling round-up moves each share to $25.09, for a rounded total of $100.36 — an extra $0.06 tip the group leaves voluntarily so no one needs exact change.

Frequently Asked Questions

15% for adequate service, 18–20% for good service, and 20–25% for excellent service or large parties. Always leave at least a few dollars on small orders rather than a tiny percentage.

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more precise, but most people tip on the total shown because that is the number they see on the receipt.

15–20% is standard, with a $3–5 minimum on short or inexpensive trips since a percentage alone can be too small to matter to the driver.

Exact splits are fair to the cent but awkward at the table; rounding each share up slightly over-tips the server and avoids the hassle of small change, which most groups prefer.
