Calculate total square footage across one or more rooms and estimate material cost in one step. A built-in waste buffer ensures you order enough flooring, tile, or paint for cuts and mistakes instead of running short mid-project.

How This Calculator Works

Square footage measures the two-dimensional floor area of a space in square feet (sq ft). It is the starting number for ordering flooring, paint, tile, sod, concrete, and almost any material sold by area. This calculator handles one or more rectangular rooms at once and automatically adds a waste buffer so you order a little extra rather than falling short mid-project. For irregular or L-shaped rooms, break the space into separate rectangles and add each as a room — the tool sums every entry into one total.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

Area of one room = Length (ft) × Width (ft).

Total square footage = the sum of every room's area.

Order quantity with waste = Total × (1 + waste buffer %). A 10% buffer is the standard contractors use for cuts, offcuts, and mistakes when ordering flooring or tile. Always round the final order up to the nearest full unit.

Worked Step-by-Step Example

A room measures 12 ft by 10 ft: Area = 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft.

Add a 10% waste buffer for a flooring order: 120 × 1.10 = 132 sq ft to purchase. If the flooring is sold in cartons covering 22 sq ft each, you would buy ceil(132 / 22) = 7 cartons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Split the room into rectangles, calculate each section (Length × Width) separately, and add the results. Add each rectangle as its own room in this calculator and the tool will sum them into one total automatically.

For flooring, tile, carpet, and paint-by-area estimates, use floor area only (Length × Width). For paint, multiply wall length by wall height instead, and subtract the area of doors and windows. This square footage calculator is built for floor and surface area, not wall area.

A 10% waste buffer covers cuts, offcuts, and minor mistakes and is the standard for flooring and tile. Order the exact calculated area and you will almost always run short. For diagonal or complex patterns, increase the buffer to 15%.
