Convert length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, area, and data units instantly across every common unit. Temperature is handled with its own formula and digital storage uses binary powers of 1024 so conversions match what your operating system reports.

How This Calculator Works

Unit conversion translates a quantity from one unit to another within the same category — length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, area, or data. Most categories use a base-unit multiplier: each unit has a factor relative to a base (for length, the meter), and the converter multiplies the input by the source factor and divides by the target factor. Temperature is special because Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin each have different zero points, so it's handled with a dedicated formula through Celsius as an intermediate. Data storage uses powers of 1024, not 1000.

The Mathematical Formula & Logic

For most categories: Result = Value × (factor from → base) ÷ (factor base → to).

Temperature via Celsius: F→C = (F − 32) × 5/9; C→F = C × 9/5 + 32; K = C + 273.15.

Data: factors are powers of 1024 (1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024² bytes, etc.).

Worked Step-by-Step Example

1 Meter to Feet: 1 × 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808 ft.

1 Gallon to Liters: 1 × 3.78541 ÷ 1 = 3.785 L.

100 °F to Celsius: (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 37.78 °C.

1 Megabyte to Bytes: 1 × 1,048,576 = 1,048,576 bytes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin each have a different zero point, so you can't simply multiply like you can with length or weight. Conversions go through Celsius as an intermediate: subtract or add the offset first, then scale. That's why this converter handles temperature separately from the multiplier-based categories.

A fluid ounce measures volume (about 29.57 mL); a standard ounce measures weight (about 28.35 g). They are different units entirely. Mixing them up is one of the most common cooking conversion errors — check whether your recipe means volume or weight before converting.

Computers use binary addressing, so digital storage is built on powers of 2: 1 KB = 2¹⁰ = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024² bytes, 1 GB = 1024³ bytes. That's why a '500 GB' drive shows fewer usable bytes than 500 × 10⁹ in the operating system — the OS counts in binary units while the label uses decimal units.
